How to Show Up in ChatGPT, Gemini & Perplexity AI Search Results

By Webiske  ·  June 30, 2026  ·  6 min read

Only 1.2% of local businesses get recommended by AI assistants when customers ask for category recommendations — and strong Google rankings don't automatically translate. Here's what actually drives AI citations, and how to build them.

The short answer: To show up in ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and Perplexity answers, your business needs four things — entity clarity (AI knows exactly what you are and where), off-site authority (directory listings + reviews with category keywords), answer-first content (pages that directly answer the questions people ask AI), and structured schema markup (LocalBusiness or Service schema so AI reads your data precisely, not guesses).

Why AI search is different from Google

When someone searches Google, they see a list of links and decide which to click. When someone asks ChatGPT "what's the best marketing agency for restaurants in Louisville," they get a direct answer — one or two businesses named, with a reason. There's no page 2.

The businesses that appear in those answers aren't the ones with the most backlinks. They're the ones that AI systems can confidently classify and recommend. That requires a different kind of optimization — one that traditional SEO agencies aren't built for yet.

In our June 2026 live audit of Louisville businesses across ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity — using the exact prompts local customers use — zero out of five tested businesses appeared in any AI recommendation. The winners were national brands with massive directory footprints. This is the gap local businesses need to close.

The four signals that determine AI visibility

1. Entity clarity — AI needs to know exactly what you are

AI models classify every business into a category: "Italian restaurant in Louisville," "AI marketing agency for restaurants," "local SEO consultant." They pull that classification from three primary sources:

If these signals conflict or are vague — if your website says "digital solutions" while your GBP says "marketing agency" and Yelp says "web design" — AI models either file you in the wrong bucket or skip you. The fix is NAP consistency (name, address, phone) plus a unified description across every platform that uses the same category language.

2. Off-site authority — third-party confirmation is what AI trusts

This is where most local businesses fail. AI models weight third-party confirmation far more than your own website claims. The signals that matter:

Perplexity (the most important AI for local visibility) is web-grounded — it searches the live web before answering. That means today's off-site footprint directly impacts today's Perplexity citations. ChatGPT and Gemini draw from training data, so improvements there take months. Perplexity is where you'll see results fastest.

3. Answer-first content — write for the question, not the keyword

AI assistants are retrieval engines. They're looking for a direct, confident answer to the user's question. Pages built around keyword density don't serve this job — pages built around direct answers do.

The structure that gets cited:

  1. A clear H2 question (the exact thing someone would ask an AI)
  2. A 40–60 word direct answer immediately below it — no preamble
  3. Supporting detail, data, or a list that backs up the answer

A page that opens with "Great question! There are many factors to consider when thinking about AI search visibility..." will never get cited. A page that opens with "To show up in ChatGPT results, your business needs four things: entity clarity, off-site authority, answer-first content, and schema markup" has a chance.

4. Structured schema markup — make it machine-readable

Schema markup (LocalBusiness, Service, FAQPage, Organization) tells AI crawlers exactly what to read — your business name, services, location, prices, and description — without guessing from surrounding text. Businesses with complete, accurate schema get classified correctly. Businesses without it get classified by inference, which is slower and less accurate.

The highest-ROI schema types for local business AI visibility:

How long does it take?

For Perplexity (web-grounded): directory citation improvements + GBP updates can show results in 3–14 days, since Perplexity re-crawls frequently.

For ChatGPT and Gemini (training data): these models update on longer cycles — 2 to 6 months before on-site schema improvements influence their answers. Building strong off-site footprint now sets you up for the next training cycle.

What to do first

If you're starting from zero, prioritize in this order:

  1. Complete your Google Business Profile — category, description, hours, photos, Q&A. This is the single highest-leverage action for local AI visibility.
  2. Add LocalBusiness + FAQPage schema to your homepage and key service pages.
  3. Claim your Clutch, Yelp, and Chamber listing — these directories are in Perplexity's trusted source index.
  4. Ask for reviews with category language — prompt customers to mention what you do and where you're located.
  5. Rewrite one page per week using the answer-first format above.

One thing that doesn't work: llms.txt. Google confirmed in June 2026 that llms.txt files have no impact on rankings or AI Overviews inclusion. Focus on the five steps above instead.
